Who remembers Penscynor Wildlife Park? 🌿 Once one of Wales’ favourite family spots, it’s now a relic, slowly being reclaimed by nature. Imagine a place that started as a small bird collection in someone’s garden and became a beloved day out for countless kids in the ’90s. 🐦

It all began with Idris Hale’s bird hobby, which exploded into a full-blown attraction after a monkey charmed his wife, leading to a whole host of animal friends, including sea lions and meerkats! 🐒🐧 Every visit was an adventure with hundreds of school trips and memories made, not to mention the famous chair lift and alpine slide that doubled its visitor numbers in the ’80s.
Despite its popularity, financial woes hit hard by the mid-’90s. By 1996, losses grew, and despite efforts by Idris’s grandson Jon Quant, the park finally closed its doors. The beloved animals were rehomed, and Penscynor became a wistful memory for those who grew up exploring its wonders.

Jon recalls, “It was an amazing way to grow up, surrounded by nature and responsibility. Most kids couldn’t say, ‘Want to come see my penguins?’ as we could!” 🐦🐒
Though the park is now derelict, anyone who visited can still feel its magic. Can you picture those summer days and school trips? Share your favourite Penscynor memories below and let’s reminisce together! 💬✨
