Starting 2nd February, major adult content sites like Pornhub, YouPorn, and Redtube will be shutting down access to new users from the UK. Existing users with verified accounts will still have access, but newcomers will hit a virtual wall. This drastic decision comes as a result of the Online Safety Act (OSA) introduced last year, which mandates strong age checks to keep kids away from adult content.

The Canadian company, Aylo, behind these popular sites, isn’t happy about the changes. They argue that the OSA actually makes the internet more dangerous by pushing traffic to unregulated and potentially risky websites, all while compromising user privacy.

Research supports their concerns. A recent poll found that nearly half of adult content consumers in the UK bypass age checks anyway since the July rule change. Users are understandably wary of sharing personal info.

Alex Kekesi, a top exec at Aylo, explained that the company doesn’t want to be part of what they call a “failed system.” They believe that the OSA hasn’t accomplished its goal to protect minors and that the current framework is full of loopholes leading users to less safe alternatives.

Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, insists that porn sites must either implement age checks or block access altogether. They’ve been cracking down on non-compliance, already hitting one provider with a £1 million fine.

In the meantime, debates rage on about whether tech should come up with device-level solutions for age verification. But for now, changes are coming fast, and the digital world will be a bit different for UK users. What do you think? Can the OSA really protect minors, or is it causing more harm than good? 🤔💭
