Heartbreak in Dolgellau: A family’s beloved home has been left a charred shell following a devastating fire that destroyed everything they owned. Glyn and Susan Jones, both in their 70s, were caught in the blaze while they were at home, only escaping with the clothes on their backs and their mobile phones. Their son, Gareth, recalled how his dad first noticed something was wrong after smelling smoke. Initially thinking it came from the kitchen, Glyn soon discovered that the real threat was a car on fire in the garage, which quickly spread to the house.
Despite Glyn’s attempt to extinguish the flames, the fire spread rapidly, fuelled by an older tar-based felt beneath the slate roof. Firefighters faced challenges due to the rural location, running out of water and having to find alternative supplies, which sadly allowed the fire to spread further. The family lost irreplaceable items like family photographs and precious jewellery passed down through generations. Gareth’s sister, Anwen, and her partner, who were living at the property, also lost all their belongings, including a cherished BMW.
In the aftermath, the family has been moving between temporary accommodations, struggling to find something more stable in the tourist-driven area. Glyn and Susan are determined to rebuild their home, brick by brick, over the next 12 to 18 months. The emotional toll has been heavy, affecting their health, but support from the community has been a beacon of hope. A GoFundMe page has been set up and raised over £2,000 to help cover immediate essentials and the enormous task of rebuilding their lives. The couple expressed their deep gratitude for the outpouring of generosity and kindness they’ve received during this incredibly challenging time.
