Calls for Resignation Grow as Welsh Pension Scandal Unfolds: Survivor Speaks Out

A 79-year-old former steelworker, John Benson, is calling for the resignation of Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Pensions Minister Torsten Bell after being short-changed on his pension. John is one of the victims of the Allied Steel and Wire (ASW) pensions scandal in Cardiff. He says he’s only getting half of the pension he paid for—£13,000 instead of the £26,000 he expected.

Rachel Reeves recently announced that from January 2027, victims of such scandals will receive inflation-linked rises. But for John and others, this comes after years without crucial inflationary increases since the collapse of ASW in 2002. The gap in what John receives and what he paid for remains wide, with no back payments to make up the loss.

In a powerful letter, John expressed his frustration at still fighting for justice 23 years later. “Stitched up again,” he said, critiquing what he sees as betrayal by those in power. The ASW workers initially feared they’d lost all their pension savings when the firm went bust. A deal in 2007 aimed to compensate them, offering 90% of their lost savings. However, the lack of inflation protection has eroded that value over 18 years.

Plaid Cymru is advocating for the pensions scandal victims, pushing for amendments that would ensure full inflation protection and back payments. Ann Davies MP has long supported John and his peers, stressing the injustice these pensioners have faced as their pensions were eroded year after year.

While changes in the recent budget aim to address this, Davies argues they don’t go far enough. The push is on to remove caps and amend legislation to truly backdate payments and secure a fair retirement for these hard-working individuals.

In the meantime, government spokespeople highlight broader pension support measures, but for John Benson and others, the fight for rightful compensation continues. What are your thoughts on this issue? Let’s talk about it in the comments! 📢 #justiceforpensioners #uknews #pensionfairness
