🔥 Time-travelled back to 1839 in the streets of Newport! Last night, hundreds marched with burning torches, retracing the poignant steps of the Chartists. Picture the scene: Bellevue Park buzzing with anticipation at 5:30pm, as the crowd marched down Stow Hill to historical Westgate Square. This very spot witnessed the tragic confrontation where 22 brave souls lost their lives demanding the fundamental right to vote.

The event, led by esteemed actor Gareth David-Lloyd and TUC Cymru’s Shavanah Taj, is part of the Newport Rising Festival—a 10-day celebration of history and hope. The festival’s organised by ‘Our Chartist Heritage’, a voluntary trust honouring the legacy of these courageous individuals who shaped voting rights not just in Britain, but globally.

This annual torchlit procession is more than a march; it’s a vivid commemoration, shining a light on the sacrifices made for democracy. From gripping historical reenactments to enlightening talks, Newport Rising is about keeping our past alive and inspiring future generations.
