Cardiff is bustling with life, but there are a few changes we’d love to see in 2026 to make it truly shine! Here’s a rundown of our hopes for the capital over the next year:
1. **Transport Overhaul**: Rush hour traffic is a nightmare, but with the South Wales Metro and tram-trains launching, we’re hopeful for smoother commutes and better connectivity.
2. **Howells Redevelopment**: The closure of House of Fraser left a void on St Mary’s Street. Exciting plans are in motion for new apartments, a public square, and a hotel, balancing historic charm with modern needs.
3. **Support for Local Businesses**: Independent gems like The North Star and Little Man Coffee Co need our support to survive economic pressures. Let’s rally around these unique spots that make Cardiff special!
4. **Cleaner Streets**: Litter and waste have been longstanding issues. New “seagull-proof sacks” have already reduced litter by 16%! Let’s keep up the momentum for a tidier city.
5. **New Music Venue**: A 16,500-capacity arena is set to transform Cardiff Bay, bringing jobs and visitors. Delayed till 2028 due to design changes, but we can’t wait for the boost it’ll bring to the local economy.
6. **More Gigs**: After Oasis rocked the Principality Stadium, we’re eager for more big names in 2026. Sam Fender, Olivia Rodrigo or Harry Styles, anyone?
7. **St David’s Hall**: Closed due to ceiling issues, delays are frustrating. With new management from Academy Music Group, fingers crossed for a 2027 reopening.
8. **Sporting Highlights**: From Geraint Thomas’ triumphant win to Wales’ football qualifiers, let’s keep the sporting spirit alive with more diverse events.
9. **Celebrating Diversity**: The removal of the ‘My City My Shirt’ mural was a loss. We need more public art celebrating Cardiff’s diverse communities to tell their important stories.
10. **Housing Solutions**: With a 66% increase in homelessness, the housing crisis needs urgent action. Let’s find sustainable solutions to provide everyone a place to call home.
What changes would you love to see in Cardiff? Let’s make 2026 a year of positive transformation! 🌟
