Driving test wait times in Britain are hitting some serious delays. The hope to slash wait times down to seven weeks? Well, that won’t happen until late 2027, says a new report. 📅 At present, eager learners are facing a whopping 22-week wait! And with nearly a third of learners forking out up to £500 to third parties to secure test slots, the struggle is real.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) hasn’t managed to recruit enough examiners, leaving spaces scarce despite ongoing recruitment efforts. The pandemic led to 1.1 million cancelled tests in 2020/21, and not all of these have been rescheduled yet.

A big hurdle? Automated systems are snapping up test slots in bulk, making it tricky for the DVSA to gauge actual demand. High examiner exit rates, due to low pay and safety worries, are throwing another spanner in the works. Despite efforts, only 83 new examiners have been appointed against a goal of 400.

Recommendations are rolling in for the DVSA and the Department for Transport to ramp up efforts in making tests readily available for learners. In a bid to tackle the backlog, military examiners are stepping in to assist, and measures are in place to curtail test slot reselling at inflated prices.

By spring 2026, new rules will limit test relocations and ensure only learners can book slots. Positive progress? An extra 74,847 tests were conducted between June and November this year, compared to last year. Yet, more decisive action is needed to streamline the system. 🚦
