📊 Income Tax Hike on the Horizon? 📈

In the world of UK politics, eyes are on Chancellor Rachel Reeves as speculation mounts over a potential income tax increase in next month’s Budget. Despite assuring that Labour’s manifesto pledges to keep income tax, national insurance, and VAT untouched still “stand,” Reeves remains tight-lipped about the finer details as she crafts the upcoming Budget.
With the Institute for Fiscal Studies pointing to the need for £22 billion in tax rises or spending cuts, fuelled by higher borrowing costs and sluggish growth, all options seemingly remain on the table. Increasing the basic rate of income tax by just 1p could generate a substantial £8 billion, though it risks breaking a long-standing manifesto promise and marks the first increase since the ’70s.

As part of addressing the fiscal challenges, there are rumours the Chancellor might also review the amount savers can put away in cash ISAs, potentially cutting the allowance from £20,000 to £10,000. Treasury Minister Lucy Rigby mentioned balancing cash and share investments in ISAs, aiming for a shareholding democracy that leaves Brits better off.

On the plus side, there’s buzz that the Budget might deliver a boost to workers through an increase in the minimum wage and moves to eliminate lower wage rates for younger workers. Is change in the air? 🔄
