What began as a day of triumph and excitement quickly turned to tragedy on Monday evening when a car drove into crowds attending a Liverpool FC victory parade, leaving dozens injured and bystanders in shock. Among those caught in the panic was Leah Bower from Pembrokeshire, whose account of the aftermath paints a harrowing picture of the chaos that ensued on the city’s streets.

According to emergency services, at least 47 people sustained injuries when the vehicle entered the area around Water Street, with four children among those needing treatment. The severity of the incident quickly became apparent, with authorities confirming on Tuesday that four individuals remain in a critical condition in hospital.

Ms. Bower had travelled to Liverpool with her family to partake in the city’s jubilant celebrations, only to be swept up in terror a street away from where the car ploughed into fans. Speaking on BBC Radio Wales the following morning, she reflected on how dangerously close they had come to being at the centre of the disaster. “We were almost on Water Street ourselves for the event,” she recalled. “The only reason we weren’t was because some trees made us move further into the city centre, which likely kept us away from the direct impact.”

As festivities turned to fear, Ms. Bower described seeing crowds in turmoil, people screaming and running for safety, desperately clinging to their children and shielding their eyes from the unfolding scene. The street was overtaken with a tide of panic as families tried to make sense of what had just happened, many frantically attempting to contact loved ones on their phones.

Bower emphasised the confusion she and her family felt at first. “We had no idea what was happening, just that people were distressed everywhere,” she said. As she and her family took a shortcut hoping to avoid the crowds, they found themselves thrust into the scene’s aftermath — witnessing injured people on the ground, some needing urgent medical attention while others suffered more minor cuts and bruises.

Despite the chaotic circumstances, Ms. Bower praised the emergency response, noting how swiftly medical teams managed to reach the injured, even with so many people on the scene. She admitted, however, that it took time for the severity of the event to sink in. “At that moment, you don’t want to believe something so terrible could happen. It just doesn’t seem real—roads are supposed to be closed for these events. We just wanted to get back to our hotel after a long, wet day.”

Like many, Ms. Bower’s initial instinct was to ring her family and assure them of her safety. They had no knowledge of what had occurred, further reinforcing just how immediate the situation became for those present. By the time the true scale of events reached her phone via the news, she was already back at her hotel, in a state of disbelief.

Even as Ms. Bower and others walked away from the area, the wider city remained largely unaware of the tragedy. “Further from Water Street, there was still a feeling of celebration, people unaware of the horror that had happened moments ago,” she recalled, revealing how shocking it was to transition so rapidly from euphoria to numbness.

A 53-year-old man from Merseyside has been arrested in connection with the incident. Police investigations are ongoing, with large sections of Liverpool’s city centre cordoned off as forensic teams continued their work on Tuesday morning.

The incident has cast a sombre tone over what should have been a celebratory occasion, raising questions about the safety measures in place at large public gatherings. Authorities and community leaders are urging witnesses to come forward with any additional information that could aid the investigation.

As those affected begin to recover, both physically and emotionally, Liverpool’s community comes together in support of the injured and their families, determined not to let a moment of horror overshadow their city’s spirit. Further updates from the police and local government are expected as the situation develops.
