In a chilling turn of events, 69-year-old Tony Porter acted as the driver to a doorstep tragedy in Talbot Green. For just £15, he transported the criminals who carried out the murder of Joanne Penney. Last year, on March 9, Joanne was shot point-blank in the heart, tragically losing her life.

Tony was parked around the corner from where the dreadful act took place. Despite being found not guilty of murder or manslaughter, he was convicted of playing a part in an organised crime gang. He worked as an occasional driver for Joshua Gordon, a reputed drug dealer from Leicester and head of a crime group involved in a rivalry that led to the murder.

Alongside Huntley, who pulled the trigger, individuals Joshua Gordon, Kristina Ginova, Jordan Mills-Smith, and Melissa Quailey-Dashper were all found guilty of the heinous crime. Porter’s relationship with Quailey-Dashper thrust him into a criminal world he hadn’t known before.

During the trial, Porter described Gordon as a “dangerous man”. Though he claimed no involvement in drug dealing himself, Porter admitted he knew about the operations and sometimes drove the gang members to their meetings. It’s astonishing that he received mere “pocket money” for his risky involvement.

Porter’s life had taken a downward spiral following the death of his wife and the loss of his job and home. His involvement with this organised gang was a consequence of these personal tragedies, leaving him living out of his car at times.

The judge sentenced Porter to 22 months, reflecting on his “helpful” yet misguided role in these criminal undertakings. As he serves out the rest of his sentence on license, the story serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly life can spiral out of control when swept into the world of crime.
