🌊🌪️ Gwaelod-y-Garth Devastated by Flooding! 🌪️🌊

Imagine your local football pitch transforming overnight. That’s precisely what happened in the tight-knit community of Gwaelod-y-Garth, located just outside Cardiff. Following a planned blast at Taffs Well Quarry, a sudden landslide of water, mud, and rocks tore through the heart of the village, leaving significant damage in its wake.

The beloved sports pitches, a home ground for the Gwaelod Rangers youth teams, were among the hardest hit. More than 300 young players, aged 5 to 15, train and play on these fields regularly. As of Thursday, the pitches were not just flooded—they were buried under a layer of mud and debris, with large rocks disruptively scattered across the grounds.
💬 Hannah Hopes, the dedicated chair of the Gwaelod Rangers, described the scene: “The water came with such force. It’s gone right into homes and across roads.” Despite the receded water, the field, crucial for countless upcoming matches and training sessions, is now an unrecognisable field of rubble.
But in true community spirit, locals have already started rallying around to offer their help. While the council is working on an action plan to restore the pitches, the club, the local government, and the quarry operators are all committed to prioritising playtime for the kids. 🌟
The council and emergency services are currently on the scene, addressing the extensive clean-up operation, while also extending support to affected residents. Roads remain closed until they can be securely reopened.
Gwaelod-y-Garth residents, your resilience is incredible! ❤️ Let’s hope the pitches are back in action soon so the kids can go back to doing what they love most: playing football! ⚽
Stay safe, everyone, and keep supporting each other through this challenging time. 🙌
