🚨 Tackling Delays in Checks for Elderly Residents in Swansea 🚨

Swansea Council is making strides in reducing the backlog of vital assessments for care home residents with limited decision-making abilities. This improvement is partly due to a revamped process that leans on previous assessments, skipping the need for constant re-evaluations unless there’s a notable change in the resident’s condition.

🔍 Why the Change?
Councils conduct Deprivation of Liberty Safeguard (DoLS) evaluations for those in care homes. With a whopping 1,475 applications in 2024-25 compared to the 978 just a few years back, this has become an urgent task. In February, Swansea had 259 pending DoLS referrals, but by October, this dropped to 73, thanks to a more efficient process!

🤔 What’s the New Process?
After a resident has settled in a care home, ongoing assessments focus on previous reports unless new care restrictions or significant changes arise. This not only speeds things up but also cuts costs. The council stresses residents’ wishes and feelings are always prioritised and face-to-face meetings are part of the process to ensure everyone’s voice is heard.
🚀 Future Prospects
On the horizon, an entirely new system called Liberty Protection Safeguards might be on the cards, hinting at further changes in how such assessments are conducted across the UK.
Swansea Council remains committed to meeting assessment demands and continues to increase support by training more professionals. If any concerns arise during an evaluation, the full assessment process will be followed, ensuring no stone is left unturned.
