Thankfully, a crisis was averted when rangers spotted smoke billowing from the hills near Ty Canol. Firefighters rushed to Carnedd Meibion-Owen to tackle an insidious blaze that had crept deep into the peat after reigniting despite earlier efforts to put it out. The fire has now been fully extinguished, but it’s a stark reminder of how quickly things can get out of hand.

As Wales battles prolonged heat and drought, we’re facing severe risks of wildfires. In Blaenavon, a different blaze has already left land equivalent to 300 football pitches scorched black. So, let’s all do our part to safeguard our natural landscapes: avoid lighting campfires, barbecues, and using sky lanterns or fireworks. Even a tiny spark can cause enormous destruction.
