Big Mac Dreams Crushed in Chepstow! 🍔🚫

Despite a wave of local support, plans for a new McDonald’s and drive-thru near the stunning Wales Coastal Path have been stopped in their tracks. Residents were eager to welcome the golden arches, promising to bring 85 permanent jobs and 125 construction roles to the area. However, Monmouthshire County Council wasn’t lovin’ it, citing concerns over road safety and site designation.

The proposal aimed to set up shop on green fields at Newhouse Farm Industrial Estate. Trouble is, the land is earmarked for offices, light industry, or storage, not for burgers and fries. Plus, with busy roads cutting through the area, accessing the site safely without a car raised eyebrows.
Local councillors were split. Some saw it as a juicy job opportunity, yet they also emphasised the need for safe access. Roads are bustling, and without proper crossings, the council worried about employees and Big Mac fans navigating the area.
A standout voice, Cllr Armand Watts, was “broadly in favour” but highlighted that safety is non-negotiable. Fellow councillor Sue Riley even floated the idea of installing barriers to stop pedestrians from crossing the hectic M48 roundabout.
Despite submitting 339 supportive comments, the McDonald’s dreams were dashed as 11 councillors backed the planning officer’s refusal recommendation. The reason? It simply didn’t fit with the council’s blueprint for development or enhancing public transport.
So, while there’s no new McDonald’s this time around, the passionate debate showed just how much Chepstow cares about its community and development. Let’s keep the conversation going – who knows what the future holds for this site? 🍟🤔
