Residents of the charming seaside town of New Quay in Ceredigion have been rallying together to protect their beloved community! A passionate group has raised over Β£6,000 to launch a legal challenge against a proposed development of 30 affordable homes. The plans were previously rejected by Ceredigion Council, despite being recommended for approval. But now, the housing association behind it, Barcud, is pushing back with an appeal.

Locals are concerned that the development could lead to antisocial behaviour and impact the town’s thriving tourism by removing vital parking spaces. With 26% of homes in the town already being second homes or holiday lets, residents fear the addition of the new houses could create more challenges.

The New Quay Traders Association has been pivotal in voicing economic concerns, with an online petition, ‘Save New Quay Car Park β Protect our Future’, gathering around 2,500 signatures. Those opposed to the housing scheme argue that it would significantly reduce parking and disrupt the flow of visitors, impacting local businesses.
With an appeal now in motion at Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW), the community is stepping up its efforts. Theyβve initiated a GoFundMe campaign, Save New Quay Car Park, West Wales, aiming for more funds. The campaign organisers insist that the collective voice of residents and local businesses has power, as they managed to halt the initial application. However, they stress that further funds are essential to adequately prepare and present their case.
Imagine a New Quay where cars endlessly circle for parking, tourists turn away in frustration, and businesses suffer β that’s what locals hope to avoid. The battle to preserve the essence of New Quay continues, with residents determined to ensure their community thrives as it should.
