🚸 Community Rallies to Save Abertillery School! 🌟

A spirited protest recently took place in Abertillery, as passionate locals rallied to oppose the proposed closure of Roseheyworth Primary School Campus. With the council considering reducing surplus spaces at Abertillery Learning Community, those in favour of keeping the school open are making their voices heard.

The threat to close this campus by August 2027 has stirred significant community action. The reduction would lower the school’s capacity from 980 to 770 pupils to tackle a projected deficit crisis at ALC, currently nearing £898,000. But the community isn’t backing down! During the protest, more than 200 objections were gathered, showing just how much this school means to local families.

Kirsty Lloyd, co-chair of Roseheyworth PTFA, praised the day’s success, saying, “The protest was great, lots of community interaction and positivity.” The demonstrators, young and old, waved placards and cheered on supportive motorists, creating a lively atmosphere of solidarity.
Local Senedd Members, including those from Plaid Cymru and Reform UK, joined in, highlighting the cross-party support for the cause. Despite council plans progressing, protestors are hopeful. The 28-day statutory objection period wraps up today, a key moment in this campaign’s journey.
The council’s Labour Cabinet has received the consultation report with clear public opposition, yet the next steps remain to be decided. Savings from the proposed closure are expected at £2.2 million over five years, but many are questioning at what cost to the community.
Stay tuned as we follow this unfolding story to see if the people’s voices will lead to a change of heart in the council chambers. 💬🏫✨
