The bank holidays for Wales and England in 2026 have just been confirmed, but not everyone is thrilled! While we’ve got eight bank holidays lined up, Scotland and Northern Ireland are scoring extra days off! Scotland gets nine, and Northern Ireland gets ten, thanks to St. Patrick’s Day and the Battle of the Boyne.

There’s a bit of buzz on social media from folks calling for changes. The long summer gap from late May to late August without a break is causing some grumbles. One user pointedly asked for another summer holiday, saying, “Nothing between the end of May and the end of August is ludicrous!”

Plus, there’s been chatter about why St David’s Day on March 1st isn’t a holiday yet. A recent poll found a whopping 80% of people think it’s time to make it one! England’s St George’s Day isn’t on the bank holiday list either.
Bank holidays have been part of our lives since 1871 when banks got the go-ahead to close, giving everyone a well-deserved break. Originally, everyone enjoyed a day off on the first Monday in August, but since 1971, only Scotland’s kept it then, while elsewhere it shifted to the end of the month.
In terms of time off, folks in Wales and England actually see fewer holidays than many places globally — only Mexico gives its people a shorter list with just seven days off.
Here are the 2026 bank holiday dates for Wales and England:
– Jan 1: New Year’s Day
– Apr 3: Good Friday
– Apr 6: Easter Monday
– May 4: Early May Bank Holiday
– May 25: Spring Bank Holiday
– Aug 31: Summer Bank Holiday
– Dec 25: Christmas Day
– Dec 28: Boxing Day (Substitute Day)
Let’s see if public opinion sways any changes in the future! What do you think? Should there be more breaks in the summer? Would you like St David’s Day as a bank holiday? Share your thoughts! 🌞🎉
