Teachers in Wales are facing delays in their pay rises as a new governmental clash unfolds! 🚸 The recently inaugurated Plaid Cymru Welsh Government is at loggerheads with headteachers over pay matters, with tensions rising just weeks into their term. Cardiff Bay has postponed the release of the Independent Welsh Pay Review Body’s report for the 2026-27 academic year pay award, leaving school leaders and teachers in the lurch. 📉

This delay means discussions and the receipt of any pay awards are now up in the air, causing frustration among educators. The National Association of Headteachers Cymru didn’t hold back, criticising this unexpected holdup. Their statement rings loud and clear: such treatment of hardworking educators isn’t the ideal start for the new government.

Originally, the pay review report was to be published on June 12, kicking off a four-week consultation. But now, unions are being told to wait until September! Laura Doel of NAHT Cymru expressed concerns that this unnecessary delay could push pay agreements all the way to the New Year. According to her, there’s no legitimate reason for this stall. 📅

The call is clear: publish the report now to allow consultations before the summer break ends. NAHT is urging Plaid Cymru to uphold the previous administration’s commitment to at least match the pay awards given in England. After years of real-terms pay reductions and with tight school budgets, an above-inflation, fully funded pay rise is crucial for recruiting and retaining talent in Welsh schools. 🌍✏️
In response to the critiques, the Welsh Government noted that they’re carefully reviewing the recommendations and plan to consult on a pay award post-summer holidays. Let’s hope for swift action that respects our dedicated teachers and school leaders! 🙏 #WelshEducation #TeacherPay #PlaidCymru
