Later that day, he was spotted entering a room on the sixth floor of Pembroke House, pilfering a gold necklace, £5, and five euros. As he tried to make a swift exit, a resident on the seventh floor realised something was off and pursued him. Powell’s excuse? “Sorry, I have the wrong floor,” before he bolted down the stairs.

Residents and campus security weren’t having it. They chased and apprehended him, recovering the stolen items along with a small amount of cannabis. During questioning, Powell admitted he hadn’t eaten for six days and intended to sell the stolen goods to buy food.

Appearing at Cardiff Crown Court, Powell pleaded guilty to burglary and drug possession. With a hefty list of 40 prior convictions, including multiple thefts, things weren’t looking bright. Powell’s legal representative highlighted his struggles with homelessness and finding stable accommodation. Yet, the court couldn’t ignore his actions, sentencing him to 876 days in prison.

It’s a stark reminder of the struggles some face and the desperate measures hunger can drive people to.
