Feeling political drama lately? Darren Millar, leader of the Welsh Conservatives, certainly is. He’s expressed his disappointment after the sacking of health spokesman James Evans. The drama began when Evans mentioned on January 16 that he’d been approached by Reform UK but rejected their proposal to jump ship. However, questions loomed after Evans appeared on BBC Sunday Politics, dodging direct answers about defection talks, leading Millar to pull him from his position.

The tension escalated when Evans criticised party leader Kemi Badenoch and praised sacked Conservative Robert Jenrick, who joined Reform UK. For Millar, these actions were a breach of trust. Speaking on the issue, Millar emphasised the importance of unwavering commitment to the Welsh Conservative mission, aimed at challenging the Labour Party and strengthening their presence in Welsh politics.

Millar said, “I can’t have people as Welsh Conservative candidates that aren’t fully committed.” Feeling personally let down, he pointed out the necessity of loyalty, especially when team solidarity is paramount.
Despite this setback, Millar remains optimistic about the team’s cohesion and their role in holding the Welsh Labour Government accountable. He reassured supporters, “I’m not expecting any other defections, but you can never rule these things out.”
Could this be a turning point for Welsh Conservatives or a mere bump in the road? Only time will tell. Stay tuned!
