A council meeting turned intense when Conservative leader, Cllr George Carroll, was shown the door after a fiery immigration debate. Carroll’s proposal? Cut ties with City of Sanctuary UK, a charity aiding asylum seekers and refugees in integrating. The discussion quickly expanded from local concerns to a broader immigration debate.

Carroll and his team stressed that asylum seekers strain public services and advocated for a zero-tolerance stance on illegal migration. Critics slammed the motion, calling it “scaremongering” with “blatant inaccuracies.” Mayor Naomi Marshallsea demanded retracting a controversial comment about open borders supporters, but Carroll refused, leading to his exit.

Carroll stated, “Illegal migration shouldn’t be tolerated,” criticising the County of Sanctuary status for offering a mixed message. Yet, international law permits asylum claims in the UK, and the Vale of Glamorgan joined the City of Sanctuary Network in 2023 to foster a welcoming environment for those seeking refuge.

Statistics highlight that from 2018-2025, over 168,000 arrived in the UK by small boats, with 95% seeking asylum. In June 2025, there were 393 asylum seekers in the Vale, primarily from Ukraine and Afghanistan under resettlement programmes. Some residents argued the asylum seekers housed in local hotels stressed resources, while local leaders clarified they arrived via official resettlement pathways.

Others, like Labour’s Cllr Ian Buckley, emphasised that many asylum seekers helped British soldiers in Afghanistan and have earned their stay. Plaid Cymru’s Cllr Ian Johnson argued refugees are fleeing dire situations, advocating for better integration outcomes.

Concerns were raised about service overload, with some councillors pointing to increased burdens on GPs and infrastructure. Yet, data reveals that asylum claims are a small part of total immigration. While 2024 saw a dip in overall immigration numbers, asylum claims rose by 18%.

Ultimately, Carroll’s motion was defeated, with Vale of Glamorgan’s leader, Cllr Lis Burnett, condemning the motion for its inaccuracies, praising the community’s history of inclusivity and the valuable contributions of people from all walks of life in shaping the region.
