Tragic news from Salford as the coroner rules on a heartbreaking case involving Martina Karos and her daughter, Eleni Edwards. The bodies of 40-year-old Martina and her 8-year-old daughter Eleni, who had profound disabilities, were discovered at their home in September 2024. This devastating scene unfolded after emergency services checked on them when Eleni didn’t show up for school.

The tragedy was ruled as a case of carbon monoxide poisoning. Martina’s struggles with extreme loneliness and isolation as the sole carer of her daughter heavily weighed on her. Despite receiving significant support from her family and professionals, these feelings became overwhelming.

The inquest revealed that Eleni, a joyously loved child under Martina’s attentive care, faced multiple severe disabilities from a young age. Martina, originally from Poland and living in the UK since 2003, was a full-time carer for Eleni whilst battling anxiety and depression.
According to the coroner, Martina likely took her own life out of profound concern for her daughter’s future care posthumously. It’s a sombre reminder of how mental health and societal support systems intersect in critical ways. No fault was found in the support received from care professionals, but the complexities of the situation remain deeply saddening.
