🛠️ Major Repairs Needed at Wrexham Hospital! 🏥

Wrexham Maelor Hospital is tackling a big challenge as it faces a £400k bill to fix the roof of its Pathology Unit. The culprit? RAAC, a lightweight concrete favoured in public buildings from the 50s to the 90s, now causing concern as it crumbles with time.

Discovered in Jan 2025, the deteriorating RAAC in the hospital’s roof has led to immediate action from the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. They’re now on the hunt for a construction firm to repair and reinforce the roof while the laboratory continues its essential diagnostic work, including blood tests and fertility checks.
The repair work is expected to kick off in September, with a completion goal by March 2027. Thanks to quick thinking, props were installed to support the roof, which houses heavy air conditioning units. Safety first has been the priority with restricted access to the roof and guidelines for the fire service in case of emergency.
The project also includes some internal refurbishment, all while ensuring the laboratory remains fully functional. This means careful planning to maintain operations without missing a beat! 🏗️
Stay safe and keep those umbrellas handy, Wrexham! ☔
