Big shake-up in Welsh rugby! 🚨 Former Wales prop, Anthony Buchanan, has stepped down from the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) council, voicing his lack of confidence in their future plans. Known for his strong presence and credibility in the rugby world, Buchanan’s departure has stirred the pot at a critical time.

He announced his resignation at a recent council meeting, just a year shy of completing his term. Buchanan’s exit highlights growing discontent among clubs unhappy with the WRU’s strategic direction, which includes plans to downsize from four to just three regions. This means either the Ospreys or the Scarlets could face the chop, creating intense competition between the two. 🏉

The crisis has sparked talks of an extraordinary general meeting (EGM), with clubs contemplating drastic measures to voice their grievances. To make an EGM happen, 36 clubs need to agree, and a 75% vote is required to carry out any special resolutions. There’s a call for fresh elections for the WRU council, with discussions about re-evaluating the role of certain board members due to dissatisfaction over financial decisions and consultancy expenses.
Buchanan, a veteran in the business world and respected rugby figure, has previously served in key roles within Welsh rugby, including as a manager for Llanelli RFC and working with the Scarlets. His departure is seen as a significant loss for the WRU, given his experience and influence in the sport.
The WRU is now gearing up for a new election process to fill the void. In the meantime, they have extended their gratitude to Buchanan for his dedicated service over the years.
