A judge has slammed the police for a “pitiful” blunder that nearly cost an elderly fraud victim his compensation. In an outrageous oversight, the police miscalculated the amount stolen from 89-year-old William Jones by two care home employees in Llanelli. The two women duped Mr. Jones out of £31,912, but a police slip-up recorded the theft as £28,000, leaving £3,912 unaccounted for.

Swansea Crown Court heard how Claire Harding and Kelly Jones, who managed The Haven care home, exploited Mr. Jones by filling out cheques meant for his care fees. The judge expressed frustration over the police taking almost two years to resolve the case and failing to add up just ten cheques correctly.
Despite their previous repayment of £28,000, Harding and Jones have agreed to return the missing amount. Harding, a mother of two, drew from her grandfather’s savings, while Jones relied on benefits. Both women, deeply remorseful, were handed suspended sentences.

The judge criticised the force’s inefficiency, demanding a review of their processes. He stated, “This sloppiness needs to stop.” The police have acknowledged the error and are currently reviewing the case.

These two abused their trusted positions, leaving Mr. Jones, paralysed and vulnerable, with “scandalous treatment” in his later years. Thankfully, they’re being held accountable for their actions. Let’s hope this serves as a lesson in ensuring those who prey on the vulnerable are swiftly brought to justice.
