A woman has been taken into custody following a suspected drink-driving incident that forced the closure of a key Powys route for several hours. The crash, which involved a single vehicle, took place on the A458 road stretching between Llangadfan and Mallwyd on Wednesday evening.

Local authorities have confirmed that officers from Dyfed-Powys Police responded to reports of a collision at approximately 6pm on 25 June. Upon attending the incident, the police discovered that the accident involved only one vehicle. The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of a 43-year-old woman at the scene, on the suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Emergency services treated the woman for minor injuries before she was taken into police custody for further questioning. No other people were reported to be involved or injured in the crash, according to the initial police statement.

The collision resulted in the temporary closure of the A458, a frequently used thoroughfare for both local and through traffic. The closure, which lasted over three hours, caused significant disruption, with motorists advised to seek alternative routes while recovery and investigation work took place. The road was eventually reopened at around 9.30pm, restoring access for travellers between the two communities.
Police have since reassured the public that there is no ongoing danger related to the incident, and regular traffic has resumed as normal. Nevertheless, the event has reignited conversations in the local area about road safety and the ongoing risks associated with drink driving.
A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police commented: “Officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the A458 between Llangadfan and Mallwyd at around 6pm on Wednesday evening. A 43-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. She received medical attention at the scene and remains in police custody as inquiries continue.”
Drink driving remains a persistent concern for authorities and communities alike, particularly on rural roads where the consequences can be severe due to high speeds and limited visibility. Incidents such as this continue to prompt reminders from police forces about the dangers of driving under the influence and the legal repercussions that offenders face.
Local residents have expressed relief that the incident did not result in more serious injuries, but many are calling for sustained efforts to deter drink driving on roads across the region. One resident, who asked not to be named, said, “We were worried when we heard about the road closure. It’s such a busy road and you always hope people take care. Drink driving is never worth it—there’s just too much at risk.”
As police inquiries progress, the detained woman is expected to face further questioning in connection with the allegations. It is likely that more information will become available once the investigation is complete and a charging decision is made.
Those who may have witnessed the crash or have relevant information are encouraged to contact Dyfed-Powys Police to assist with their investigation. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance and safe conduct on the roads, both in Powys and across the country.
