A dramatic escape unfolded in Brent when a woman leapt from a first-floor window to flee a fiery blaze ignited by charging e-bikes. The London Fire Brigade rushed to the scene at Brondesbury Park around 5am on Wednesday, after the bikes’ lithium batteries sparked a fire inside a flat-converted house.

With the main escape route blocked by the flames, she had no choice but to jump to safety. Meanwhile, three other residents managed to scramble out onto a flat roof at the back of the property. The fire was deemed accidental, attributed to the e-bike battery failure, and served as a harsh reminder of the potential dangers.
In response, the London Fire Brigade emphasised the importance of keeping escape routes clear. They warn against storing e-bikes or e-scooters in hallways or near exits, suggesting they be kept in a room where the door can be shut to contain any potential fire. The spokesperson stressed the necessity of having working smoke alarms, which can provide the earliest warning in the event of a fire.

On average, the brigade attends an e-bike or e-scooter-related fire every other day, with last year witnessing a record 206 incidents. This surge underlines the importance of following #ChargeSafe advice for anyone owning or considering purchasing one of these vehicles. Stay safe and ensure your home is prepared with a clear escape route and effective smoke and heat detectors. Stay informed, stay prepared!
