A shocking case of identity fraud has unfolded in Swansea Crown Court! Kristian Apeletey used the details of a deceased man, John Regan, to try to secure a UK passport. He even replied to officials’ emails using the name “John.” When caught, Apeletey claimed he did this at his mother’s request, believing Regan was his godfather from Ghana living in the US.

Back in 2008, a passport was wrongly issued to Regan, who had actually passed away in 2006. Fast forward to 2022, the passport agency got a tip-off and revoked it. Despite this, Apeletey made a fresh attempt to renew the passport using Regan’s name and old documents. Sneaky, right?

But things didn’t go as planned when the passport office reached out for more info. Soon after, officers found passport photos and documents at Apeletey’s Aberaeron home in Wales. What’s more, they discovered WhatsApp messages between him and his mum discussing the fraud.
With no previous convictions, Apeletey admitted to the crime, saying he “bitterly regrets” his actions. His barrister highlighted the matriarchal influence in West African society, noting his actions were driven by maternal pressure. Despite acknowledging the severe implications of a false passport, the court decided on a suspended nine-month sentence. He also faces 150 hours of unpaid work and must pay £1,000 in prosecution costs.
What a tangled web! It’s a reminder of the lengths some will go to—just to secure a coveted passport. Your thoughts on this? Share in the comments!
