🎾 Andy Roddick Takes a Stand Against Dubai Tennis Tournament 🎾

American tennis star Andy Roddick is once again in the spotlight for criticising the Dubai Tennis Championship. The former US Open winner has a history of standing up for his beliefs, famously refusing to defend his title in 2009 in support of Israeli player Shahar Pe’er, who was denied entry into the UAE.
Fast forward to 2026, and Roddick is speaking out against tournament director Salah Tahlak’s recent proposal. Tahlak suggested that players like Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, who withdrew from the WTA 1000 event at the last minute, should face ranking-point penalties. This doesn’t sit well with Roddick, who describes the proposal as “not very well thought out.”

On his podcast, Roddick argued: “You’re going to dock them money and points? That doesn’t make any sense.” He questions the fairness of penalising athletes for choosing not to play in a tournament, especially given the hectic February schedule for WTA events.
The drama isn’t new for Dubai’s event. Roddick’s stance echoes his earlier opposition when Pe’er was banned, prompting significant backlash, including the withdrawal of the Wall Street Journal’s sponsorship and the Tennis Channel pulling its coverage. The WTA slapped the tournament with a record-breaking £220,000 fine back then.
What do you think of Roddick’s bold critique? Is he right to call out the tournament on these grounds? Join the conversation and share your thoughts! 🤔💬
