Cardiff’s County Hall was bustling with activity as two passionate protests took place outside the city council’s latest meeting.

First up, campaigners are demanding a long-overdue Welsh-medium school for the south of the city. With schools already in the north, west, and east, Carl Morris from the Ysgol De Caerdydd campaign is leading the charge for equal access to Welsh-medium education in areas like Grangetown and Butetown. Morris urges the council to seek funding to make this a reality, emphasising that travelling long distances for education should be a thing of the past.

On the flip side, Acorn protestors turned up the heat with their stance against a proposed data centre on the site of the former East Cardiff Park and Ride in Llanrumney. Their banner boldly declared “Ditch the data centre” and “Save the Park and Ride.” Lead campaigner Lizzie Bailey, alongside fellow protestors, voiced concerns that the council isn’t properly representing residents, sparking heated dialogue.

Sue Elias, a local resident, questioned the transparency of the planning process, while Dan Snipe from Acorn expressed frustration over traditional channels being ignored, hence the need for direct action. The group’s main worries centre around potential noise and environmental impacts. However, the developer, Curtis Hall Ltd, argues the noise will be minimal and any environmental impact will be mitigated.

Cardiff Council insists that the planning process for the data centre is open and in accordance with regulations. They encourage public feedback as part of their decision-making.

The scene at County Hall highlights the community’s determination to have their voices heard. Will the council address these pressing concerns? Stay tuned as Cardiff’s future continues to unfold! 🌍🏫📣
