Did you catch the latest update from the Welsh Parliament? Rhun ap Iorwerth, the new First Minister, made quite a splash in his debut at First Minister’s Questions. His big message? The UK isn’t a union of equals, and he’s fired up about gaining more powers for Wales!

Plaid Cymru’s leader isn’t holding back. He’s committed to ensuring Wales is seen as an “equal partner” in dealings with the UK Government. Fresh from a historic election win, he’s the first non-Labour politician to take this top spot. With a chat already under his belt with PM Keir Starmer, ap Iorwerth is laying down his priorities: cutting waiting lists, boosting education standards, creating jobs, fighting child poverty, and addressing the cost-of-living crisis. Oh, and he’s all about “standing up for Wales,” ensuring fair funding and accessing the full benefits of Wales’ natural resources.

However, not everyone’s on board. Dan Thomas of Reform Wales, now the Senedd’s second-largest party, thinks ap Iorwerth is too distracted by the idea of Welsh independence. Thomas insists the focus should be on more immediate issues like GP appointments, school standards, and paying the bills.
But ap Iorwerth isn’t backing down. He says it’s all about getting the right tools to do the job for Wales. In his view, pushing for expanded powers is just common sense.
What’s your take on this fiery debate? Are you Team Ap Iorwerth, ready to shake things up, or Team Thomas, focused on “the issues that matter”? Let us know in the comments! 📢
