Meet Ray Clements, a man from Liverpool who has turned his life around in the most inspiring way. Once caught in the throes of alcohol addiction, drinking up to four litres of vodka daily, Ray faced a life-changing moment when he was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition that robbed him of his sight.

Incredibly, Ray views his sight loss as a blessing in disguise, saying, “Losing my sight has saved my life. I see more clearly now than I ever have without sight.” Determined to reclaim his life, Ray embraced sobriety in February 2022 and hasn’t looked back since.

Adapting to his new life with the help of his trusty guide dog, Garson, Ray has achieved remarkable things. Not only has he become a medal-winning blind baseball player for Great Britain, hitting a historic home run, but he is also on a mission to make a difference for others with sight loss.
Ray has launched a non-profit, aiming to introduce goalball – a sport designed for the visually impaired – into mainstream schools. His journey to sobriety includes sponsoring 15 others, providing them with the support to overcome addiction as he did.
His story began on his 49th birthday, when what seemed like an ordinary morning marked the start of profound changes. Diagnosed with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), his life took a turn, prompting him to finally seek help for his drinking.
After a brief relapse upon learning of his diagnosis, Ray found strength in community support, admitting, “Since that day, since February 17, 2022, I haven’t picked up a drink nor drugs.” Despite the challenges of being registered blind, Ray continues to face each day with resilience and hope, crediting Garson for keeping him motivated and on track.
As Ray approaches four years of sobriety, he dreams of a future filled with clarity, gratitude, and endless possibilities, sharing that he’d “give my left arm to be clean and sober for five years.”
