Currently, a scheme in some regions allows families to receive £28.20 weekly per child under 16 through the Scottish Child Payment initiative. This means £112.80 every four weeks per child. The fantastic news is that this payment doesn’t affect other benefits and could expand nationwide, potentially reducing child poverty significantly.

Edward McPherson, a consultant from WPI Economics, highlighted the success of these payments in Scotland, which has already helped to lower child poverty. He suggests that if rolled out across the UK, it could be equally effective.

Here’s how the recent changes to Universal Credit break down:
– Single claimants under 25 now receive £338.58
– Single claimants 25 or older get £424.90
– Couples both under 25 see £528.34
– Couples with at least one partner 25 or older receive £666.97

Plus, there’s an additional £303.94 monthly for each child, no longer capped at two children. Also, remember to check your eligibility for Child Benefit, offering £27.05 weekly for your first child and £17.90 for additional ones. Higher earners (above £60,000) may need to repay, with full repayment kicking in once you hit £80,000.
