Big PIP News for England and Wales! 📣

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has shared an update on Personal Independence Payment (PIP), with claim numbers skyrocketing past 4 million for the first time. This vital benefit supports those with long-term physical or mental health issues in their daily lives.

What’s Changing? The government is rolling up its sleeves to reform a welfare system they say has trapped many in poverty and discouraged work. While they’ve delayed immediate reform plans, the ongoing Timms Review aims to make PIP fairer and more effective. Keep an eye out for an interim update soon!

Who’s Receiving PIP? 📊 Younger folks are increasingly joining the ranks, with 16-29-year-olds making up 16.6% of claimants as of April, up from 14.5% in 2019. Numbers for those aged 30-44 have also risen. Meanwhile, the percentage of claimants aged 45-59 has dropped significantly, while those aged 60-74 have seen a small increase.
Approval Rates: The approval rate for new claims has been dipping – down to 36.6% this April, compared to 40% in April 2025. But, the government is working to speed up assessments and reduce backlogs.
New Legislation Alert! 🚨 The “Right to Try” scheme now allows disabled claimants to explore work opportunities without fear of losing benefits. This is a huge step in helping PIP, ESA, and UC recipients across England, Wales, and Scotland ease into the workforce without immediate reassessment.
What People Are Saying: Downing Street called the current system “broken,” while pledging comprehensive reforms including more face-to-face PIP assessments. DWP echoes this, aiming for a welfare state that truly supports disabled individuals and taxpayers alike.
Shadow Work & Pensions Secretary Helen Whately has pledged to tackle PIP challenges head-on and “get Britain working again.”
