**Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill Return to Doctor Who for Special Anniversary Docu-Series**

Fans of Doctor Who are in for a nostalgic celebration as Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, who once starred as beloved companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams, are set to revisit the universe of the iconic sci-fi programme. The pair will participate in a special anniversary episode of “Doctor Who: Unleashed,” a behind-the-scenes docu-series produced to commemorate two decades since the popular revival of Doctor Who, based out of Cardiff.

The return of these familiar faces marks a significant moment for fans new and old. Gillan, hailing from Scotland, and Darvill, from England, were introduced to viewers during the era of Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor in the 2010s. Their on-screen partnership was widely celebrated, with their characters’ quirky dynamic and heartfelt storylines resonating deeply with the audience.
Since their time as the Doctor’s companions, both actors have enjoyed remarkable success in the broader world of entertainment. Gillan has notably become an international film star, featuring in major action franchises such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Jumanji. Meanwhile, Darvill’s stage talents have seen him recognised with an Olivier Award for his portrayal of Curly McLain in the renowned musical Oklahoma!, showcasing the breadth of talent among Doctor Who alumni.
In the forthcoming one-hour instalment of “Doctor Who: Unleashed,” Gillan and Darvill aren’t the only well-known faces set to make an appearance. The special will feature several actors who have brought the Doctor to life, including Ncuti Gatwa, the current incarnation of the Time Lord as the Fifteenth Doctor. The episode also promises contributions from David Tennant, who played both the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctor, as well as Jodie Whittaker, renowned for her groundbreaking role as the Thirteenth Doctor.
Alongside the Doctors themselves, a host of companions from across the years will also feature. Fans can expect to see interviews and discussions with stars such as Varada Sethu from the current series, Billie Piper who portrayed Rose Tyler, and Mandip Gill. Viewers will also benefit from insights provided by high-profile showrunners Steven Moffat, Chris Chibnall, and the show’s modern architect, Russell T Davies.
Presenter Steffan Powell has promised to delve into lesser-known secrets from Doctor Who’s production, interviewing former production designer Edward Thomas and costume designer Ray Holman. These segments aim to shed light on how Wales, particularly Cardiff, has played a pivotal role in the series’ continued success since its 2005 revival, both as a filming location and a creative hub.
The revival, which began two decades ago with Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor, marked a fresh chapter for the long-running show, reintroducing the character to a new generation. Tennant’s subsequent tenure alongside Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler propelled the show even further in popularity, establishing it as a staple of British television once more.
Looking ahead, the current Doctor, played by Gatwa, continues to build on this legacy, reportedly embarking on a dramatic confrontation in the series finale titled “The Reality War.” The anticipation is high amongst fans as the current chapter in the Doctor’s time-travelling adventures unfolds.
“Doctor Who: Unleashed” will debut on BBC iPlayer at 6am on Saturday, 7 June. It will be broadcast later that same day on both BBC One Wales and BBC Three, ensuring fans across the UK can join in the celebration of this television milestone. With a mix of nostalgia, exclusive insights, and reflections on its Welsh roots, the special promises to be a fitting tribute to twenty years of intergalactic adventures.
