Earlier in 2026, North Wales was shaken on January 28 with a 0.9 magnitude quake, its epicentre on Mynydd Mawr’s slopes. Then, on February 6, Aberdaron on the Llŷn Peninsula also experienced a 1.4 magnitude tremor. It seems our beautiful north-west Wales is quite the seismic hotspot this year!

In fact, the whole of the UK has been experiencing its fair share of seismic activity. Last year alone, 309 earthquakes were recorded across the nation, with southern Wales noted as particularly active. Over in Scotland, the area around Loch Lyon has been buzzing with quakes, making it the UK’s top earthquake spot in 2025.

Back in 1984, Llŷn Peninsula recorded the UK’s largest onshore quake, a whopping 5.4 magnitude, causing damage as far as Liverpool! These ongoing rumblings remind us of the hidden dynamics beneath our feet. Stay tuned for more updates and keep those tea cups secure! ☕🫖
