🚨 Shocking News from Swansea! 🚨

A teaching assistant from Clase Primary, Swansea, was caught driving under the influence just two hours after leaving work. Jessica Picton was stopped by police when a strong smell of cannabis was detected from her car. After conducting tests, she was found positive for cocaine, cannabis, and alcohol.

Arrested and charged, Picton faced the West Glamorgan Magistrates Court and admitted to driving under the influence. This resulted in a 17-month driving ban, a curfew with an electronic tag, and a community order for rehabilitation activities.

During a fitness to practise committee meeting, concerns arose about whether Jessica had been under the influence while at school. Headteacher Sharon Hope expressed alarm, noting Picton’s evasiveness when initially questioned. Picton claimed a family member was responsible for the cannabis smell, but suspicions remained about her conduct.
Despite these events, colleagues described Picton as hard-working and kind, especially towards vulnerable students with additional learning needs. She had an unblemished record since starting at the school in 2012, making the incident all the more surprising.
The Education Workforce Council panel found Jessica’s non-disclosure of her arrest to school authorities unacceptable, and they are deciding on potential sanctions.
It’s a reminder of the responsibilities that come with roles in education and the trust communities place in those working with our future generations. What are your thoughts on this? 🤔
