Heartbreaking news from Handsworth: Muntahar Ahmed has pleaded guilty to manslaughter after a shocking attack on 82-year-old Army veteran, Allen Karem Chand, at a bus stop on Soho Road.

On January 14 last year, Chand was waiting for the bus when Ahmed suddenly grabbed his walking stick and pushed him into the road, causing Chand to hit his head and suffer a fractured skull and brain bleed. Despite efforts from passers-by, Chand passed away in hospital five days later.

Ahmed, who fled the scene, was arrested two days after the incident and faced charges initially of wounding, later changed to manslaughter after Chand’s tragic passing.

The two men were strangers, and the unprovoked act of violence has left the community in shock. As Ahmed awaits sentencing, Chand’s family mourns the loss of their beloved father and grandfather, remembering him as a loving and law-abiding man who taught them respect and kindness.
Detective Sergeant Joanne Potter described the attack as unnecessary and tragic, underscoring the senselessness of the violence that cost an elderly man his life.
