A pensioner who was locked away for horrific crimes has passed away behind bars. Malcolm Coles, 76, who was serving time at HMP Parc in Bridgend, died on December 17th. He was convicted in 2017 for committing vile acts against a young girl between 1981 and 1987 in Sittingbourne, Kent, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The brave victim came forward decades later, ensuring Coles faced justice for his crimes, which included rape, indecent assault, and indecency with a child.

Coles, who later relocated to Wales, believed he had evaded justice, maintaining his innocence and forcing his victim to endure the trauma of a trial. Detective Constable Steve Dingwall of Kent Police praised the incredible courage of the victim, urging others who have suffered abuse, past or present, to report it to the authorities.

HMP Parc has confirmed Coles’ death and, as is the norm for deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is conducting an independent investigation. While the exact cause of death hasn’t been disclosed, it’s understood that Coles had been receiving palliative care due to a period of illness.

This case highlights the importance of coming forward and the impact it can have, even years after the crimes were committed. If you’re affected by issues of abuse, don’t hesitate to reach out to law enforcement. Justice can be served, no matter how much time has passed.
