Stewart Read, a 71-year-old pensioner, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison after a court heard how he “enjoyed” having power over the women he sexually assaulted. The abuse involved two women, both in their 20s, and occurred in multiple locations around Swansea for several years. Swansea Crown Court revealed that his actions have left one victim feeling “unworthy and broken,” impacting her entire life, while the other has turned to drink and drugs to cope.

Despite his conviction on multiple sexual assault charges, Read maintains his innocence. His defence highlighted his long career as a dryliner and mentioned his plans to relocate to the Llanelli area upon release. However, the court was clear about the manipulation tactics he used to control his victims, emphasising his enjoyment of exerting such power.

Judge Catherine Richards made it known that Read’s sentence would require him to serve two-thirds of his time behind bars before being released on licence. He will also remain a registered sex offender for life, marking a significant step in holding him accountable for his actions.
