Heartbreak in Merthyr Tydfil as a beloved grandpa’s life was tragically cut short. Ron Fealey, 82, a retired theatre nurse and cherished family man, was struck by a drink driver while walking home from a Christmas Eve church service.

The driver, NHS nurse Katrina Mahoney, was over twice the legal limit when she hit Mr. Fealey at double the speed limit. Despite her windshield being smashed, she drove off to buy cigarettes. Passers-by rushed to help, but Mr. Fealey succumbed to his injuries on Boxing Day.

The Fealey family is shattered, with granddaughter Rachael Yoganathan sharing their grief. Instead of festive joy, Christmas now marks a tragic loss. “Katrina will soon be out, but we’ll never get grandpa back,” Rachael said. “He should be surrounded by his loved ones, not lying in a cemetery.”
Rachael recounted the harrowing call that changed everything: the police informing them of the accident while they awaited Ron’s usual cheerful arrival with hugs and smiles. At the hospital, the reality of his injuries was heart-wrenching—traumatic head injuries and broken bones robbed them of future memories.
Mahoney, who initially claimed Mr. Fealey walked out in front of her, was sentenced to five years for causing death by careless driving while under the influence. She drove with her 15-year-old son in the car and failed to call for help after the accident. Her shocking actions left the family tormented by the image of Mr. Fealey alone and struggling in the hospital.
Rachael urges everyone to learn from their pain: “Don’t ever risk drink driving. We lost an irreplaceable part of our family. Treasure your loved ones while you can.”
The family now faces each holiday season with a sense of loss—no longer enjoying Ron’s infectious joy, but carrying on his love for life. Let this story serve as a reminder of the preciousness of life and the importance of making safe choices.
