Eluned Morgan is gearing up for what she calls a “new chapter” for Wales, but her recent speech left some scratching their heads. In Newport, amid old Labour faces and fresh hopefuls, Morgan outlined Labour’s key pledges ahead of the critical Senedd elections in May. With her sights set on expanding childcare, building futuristic hospitals, and cleaning up Welsh rivers, her vision is clear – but the silence on Keir Starmer was deafening.

As Welsh Labour’s dominance seems at risk, with polls suggesting a drop from 40% to just 10% in vote share, Morgan’s speech was heavy on optimism but oddly light on UK Labour references and Starmer praise. Instead, Morgan focused on what Welsh Labour has achieved over the years – free hospital parking, school breakfasts, and prescriptions – while perhaps glossing over challenges and tensions with the broader party.

The absence of UK cabinet ministers didn’t go unnoticed, nor did the muted crowd reactions. Morgan’s speech, however, wasn’t just about the accomplishments; it was a call to arms amidst impending electoral defeat. While some pledges resonated well, the minimised presence of a broader Labour endorsement was conspicuous.
Huw Thomas, Cardiff Council leader, expressed cautious optimism, emphasising past delivery and recent improvements as strengths. The morning events in Newport were calm but hopeful, as those present rallied behind Morgan’s promises of building on Welsh Labour’s legacy.
Whether this “new chapter” can truly begin, with Welsh Labour having steered the ship for nearly three decades, remains to be seen. Will the voters buy into this phase two pitch of “Protection was then. And this is now” or is it just more of the same? With the May elections fast approaching, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Will this be a new dawn for Wales, or a continuation of the same old story? Let’s watch this space!
