Eddie Jones isn’t hiding his frustration with World Rugby’s decision! The Japan head coach is riled up over his team’s Nations Championship fixture against Ireland being moved to Australia. Originally expected to play in Tokyo, Jones’ Brave Blossoms are now set to clash with Andy Farrell’s men in Newcastle, New South Wales, on July 11.

Japan, along with Fiji, joined this thrilling tournament including the Six Nations and Rugby Championship sides. But welcoming these teams comes with its price — both countries have had to move their ‘home’ games. While Fiji will play their matches in the UK, Japan’s shift to Australia hasn’t gone down well with Jones.

Why is this move such a big deal? Well, Ireland’s tour schedule sees them jetting from playing the Wallabies and the All Blacks. Jones claims the decision spares Ireland from excessive travel, implying they hold significant sway in World Rugby’s decisions. In a chat on the Rugby Unity podcast, Jones candidly mentioned, “Ireland has all the power. We have to play our home game in Australia to ease their travel.”
Whilst expressing his disappointment, Jones also acknowledged the honour it is for Japan to participate in the Nations Cup, accepting that some concessions might be inevitable. Despite the setback, the opportunity for Japan to compete on this stage is something Jones and his team are grateful for.
