Turns out, it’s not just doom and gloom. Inmates get pretty creative to entertain themselves. One ex-prisoner shared, “I joined a spelling bee in county jail, and we even made our own ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’ games using encyclopaedias and Farmers’ Almanac!”

Another former inmate recounted the hilarity of betting on which way a guard would turn when entering the pod, and for weeks, they were entertained by this simple routine. “The anticipation of his arrival was hilarious,” they said.

From paper aeroplanes and frisbee with plastic lids to creating handmade tennis balls from wet paper, inmates find all sorts of ways to have fun. One remembered, “We almost had a breakdancing contest, but the guards stopped that one.”

Despite the challenges, some prisons provide tablets with films, games, music, and even educational apps to keep prisoners occupied. A former prisoner mentioned, “They’ve got an app called Edovo—it’s got masterclasses, certificates, educational videos, and a library of free books!”

Life inside isn’t as unbearable as some might think. As one inmate reflected after spending six years in various facilities, “The biggest misconception is that it’s awful 100% of the time. Humans adapt. It becomes just life.”
