A former teacher has been sentenced to 21 months in prison after subjecting his wife to a horrifying regime of control and abuse over several years. Christopher Haynes, previously an English teacher in a secondary school, manipulated and dominated his partner, deciding who she could see and even what music could be played at home. The court heard how Haynes’ tactics were accompanied by chilling threats, claiming he had influential ties with the Freemasons and could arrange his wife’s death with a single phone call.

The details revealed in Swansea Crown Court are disturbing. The judge remarked on Haynes’ “ruthless” control over his former wife, effectively erasing her autonomy and self-worth. It was noted that Haynes showed little insight into the gravity of his actions, often blaming his ex-partner and failing to fully accept his wrongdoing.

Prosecutor Craig Jones detailed how what began as a seemingly loving relationship gradually became overshadowed by Haynes’ increasing need to control. This abusive behaviour was oddly interspersed with extravagant gifts and expensive holidays, despite financial strains. Haynes, who has remarried after his divorce, admitted to these actions only on the day of his trial, prompted by the shame and recognition of his alcoholism.
The victim bravely shared her story, describing how her once independent life turned into a “prison,” leaving her a “shell” of the woman she once was. She highlighted the love bombing and manipulative tactics employed by Haynes that had her living in fear.
As part of his sentence, Haynes received a life-long restraining order preventing him from contacting his ex-wife. His story serves as a sobering reminder of the impact of coercive control and the importance of recognising such signs in relationships.
