Meet Heulwen Wyatt, a Cardiff hero who faced a life-changing diagnosis with unyielding spirit. At 60, after just experiencing a bit of indigestion, she found herself confronted with oesophageal cancer, nicknaming the tumour “Lucifer.” As a former nurse, Heulwen had the wisdom and courage to fight back with everything she had.

“I remember that day vividly,” she recounts, having seen the doctor’s screen showing something sinister—cancer. Despite the shock, Heulwen didn’t back down. “You picked the wrong person, cancer,” she declared.
With her family relying on her, Heulwen was determined to win. Her secret weapon? A prehabilitation programme that readied her physically and emotionally for the battle ahead. “Prehab was about reclaiming control,” she asserts, having accessed the programme in Cardiff while many others were not so fortunate. Today, she’s teaming up with Abbott to expand access to this life-changing method globally.

The road wasn’t easy—five cycles of chemo and a grueling 12-hour surgery, followed by an entirely new way of living and eating. “It’s not a sprint but a marathon,” she states, adjusting to her body’s new limits.
Even with the challenges, Heulwen’s optimism shines. Although she had to step back from her beloved nursing career, she hasn’t stopped impacting lives. Now in remission, she channels her experience into educating others about cancer and prehabilitation’s importance.
“Every day is precious,” Heulwen shares, living proof that while cancer can affect the body, it can’t dim her spirit. Her journey inspires and reminds us that with resilience and the right support, there’s always hope on the horizon. And as Heulwen says, “Cancer might have messed up my body, but it’s not going to mess up my mind.”
