Former Premier League referee David Coote found himself in hot water this week, receiving a suspended nine-month prison sentence at Nottingham Crown Court. His downfall began when a sexual video involving a 15-year-old schoolboy was discovered on his laptop during an FA investigation last year.

The court heard how Coote, 43, had a tumultuous fall from grace, losing his refereeing career and facing a storm of media scrutiny. Once a prominent figure on the pitch, he was dismissed by Professional Game Match Officials Limited in December 2024, following a string of controversies, including derogatory remarks about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and a video of him using cocaine.
Coote’s lawyer highlighted his personal struggles, including battles with mental health following a relationship breakdown in 2017 and the pressures of living a hidden life before coming out as gay. These factors reportedly contributed to his past reckless behaviour.

Now working in an administrative role, Coote is trying to turn his life around, expressing remorse for his actions, and has reportedly been clean from cocaine since early 2025. Despite the challenges, he aims to move forward step-by-step, though he acknowledges that he won’t regain his former career or reputation.

The court was urged to consider his ongoing efforts to rebuild his life, while Coote himself admits to being deeply ashamed, recognising the significant personal and professional losses he’s incurred.
