🔒 Big news from Bridgend! HMP Parc, the notorious Welsh prison, is at the centre of a heated debate. With a plan to expand by 345 inmates, MPs are sounding the alarm bells, saying it might risk the safety of both inmates and staff.

Despite the UK Government’s ambition to create 14,000 more prison places, the Welsh Affairs Committee is urging a pause on this expansion. Why? Because HMP Parc has been grappling with serious issues like violence, suicide, and drug misuse. In fact, after the tragic deaths of 17 men in 2024, it’s clear that improving conditions should be the top priority.

Recent inspections have shown some progress, acknowledging the hard work of the prison’s staff and leadership. But with ongoing concerns about high levels of violence, drug use, and self-harm, along with inadequate mental health and substance misuse services, there’s still a long way to go.

Ruth Jones MP, Chair of the Welsh Affairs Committee, highlights the gravity of the situation: “Every preventable death is a tragedy. It’s vital that prisoner safety and wellbeing come first.” While there is a national need for more prison places, expanding HMP Parc at this time might put progress at risk.
Prisoners deserve safe environments for rehabilitation, not dangerous settings that jeopardise their physical and mental health. What are your thoughts on this contentious issue? 🤔 #Bridgend #HMPParc #PrisonReform
