Exciting news for Gower! The popular Llanrhidian Holiday Park is set to expand, adding 19 new lodges to its nearly 380-pitch site. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, the park already boasts a restaurant, shop, gym, beautician’s, outdoor pool, and play areas, and it’s open 11 months of the year.

John Fowler Holidays Ltd, the site owner, has just secured planning permission for the expansion. The plan includes landscaping upgrades with new trees, hedges and wildflowers to enhance the area. According to the park’s manager, Gavin Lewis, this is a “step forward” for Gower, and he insists the park greatly benefits the local economy.

However, not everyone is cheering. Some locals have voiced concerns about over-development, noise, traffic, and the impact on wildlife. There were 18 letters of objection, including multiple from one resident claiming the park doesn’t benefit the community.
Despite the objections, Swansea’s planning department approved the proposal, highlighting the potential positive impact on the area by attracting year-round visitors. This could boost local trade and services, while biodiversity is expected to flourish due to the landscape improvements.
The lodges, considered factory-built caravans under current legislation, will need council licensing before use. These additional accommodations will support 44 existing jobs and create new employment opportunities. Plus, they promise to enhance Swansea’s reputation as a year-round travel destination.
While some recreational land will be repurposed, significant green space will be preserved. Conditions for the lodges specify they are strictly for holiday accommodations, maintaining the area’s appeal as a tourist destination.
