⚠️ Attention dog lovers! There’s a serious health alert you need to know about. Leptospirosis, a rare but deadly bacterial disease, can affect both our furry friends and us humans. During rainy seasons, particularly after floods, cases tend to pop up more frequently.

🐕 What is leptospirosis? It’s an infection caused by Leptospira bacteria. In dogs, it can hit the kidneys and liver, with symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, coughing, jaundice, and more. Sadly, dogs can die within just two days of showing signs, so immediate veterinary care is crucial.

🚰 How does it spread? Dogs usually catch it from coming into contact with infected urine, either by licking it up or drinking contaminated water from puddles or streams. Humans can get it too, sometimes through direct contact with urine or water where the bacteria lurk.

👩⚕️ In people, it can range from mild to severe, potentially causing multi-organ issues. If you’re feeling unusually unwell, with symptoms like high fever, headaches, or jaundice, it’s wise to get checked out.
🛡️ Prevention is better than cure. Vaccinate your dogs, avoid letting them drink from unknown water sources, and keep clear of rodents. If you’re exposed to potentially contaminated water or work around animals, practice good hygiene. Wash your hands, clean any wounds immediately, and wear protective gear when needed.
🏊♂️ Love wild swimming or water sports? Be cautious in areas known for contamination, especially after heavy rains.
Should you spot any symptoms in your dog, or yourself, don’t wait – seek advice from a vet or GP straight away. Stay safe and keep your furry pals protected! 🐾
